Bio:

“The truth isn't always beauty, but the hunger for it is.” ― Nadine Gordimer.

These words of Nadine Gordimer have been an anthem and inspiration for Shara Lewis-Campbell, throughout her incredible career. She is the co-founder of Beauty and the Beast Publishing, an international publishing and media services company that has won multiple business awards. More than this however, the company aims to serve aspiring authors and creatives from underserved communities whilst amplifying the voices of the voiceless. While Nadine Gordimer remains an inspiration to Shara there are also great similarities between the two women. Alfred Nobel described Gordimer as someone “who through her magnificent epic writing has been of very great benefit to humanity” and this drive to make a difference, to connect people and to offer equal opportunities to all is something which Shara strives for every day.

Since being young, Shara has had a talent for English and writing. Encouraged by her stepfather and motivated by her own creativity, Shara completed a degree in English in 2013 and has since carved out her own lane in the publishing industry. For her, writing is a form of therapy and self-expression. It is through writing that she found herself and her purpose, using it to rebel against the prejudice she and her family have faced in the past. Shara encourages everyone to write courageously and hopes that as she continues to grow and learn, she can infuse her work with the sense of justice that motivates it. So often, we are taught to curtail our anger and hide emotions which have the power to make a difference, and this is a habit we need to unlearn, both individually and as a society. Every voice matters and Shara wants to provide a platform for those voices which often go unheard, turning her negative experiences into positive ones by creating opportunities for new writers.

She once said that everyone has a book within them. For Shara, there is no such thing as ‘can’t write’, but often there is a case of ‘can’t get heard’. She hopes to erase these logistical barriers that many people face when writing their story. Her speciality involves publishing aspiring writers atypically from the industry, providing them with a voice and opportunity as social beings, creatively through independent published works. Publishing the work of underrepresented authors exposes us to a unique, often invisible perspective. Their writings demonstrate aspects of society which may not be beautiful, or romantic, or idealised but contain truths more powerful than any rose-tinted vision of our world. With these stories comes hurt and trauma but every such experience is a double-edged sword, and through writing we can contribute positively to the same communities affected. It is Shara’s mission to create a concrete collective of aspiring authors who write from a place of integrity. In doing so, she transforms our understanding of the industry as a solitary endeavour into a vibrant, collaborative network of shared passion and empathy.

Shara has served almost thirty years in the industry, honing her craft, and has successfully published over seventy aspiring author’s publications to date, in addition to her own personal manuscripts. Working alongside Andrew M. Foster, Beauty and the Beast publish books, direct, and produce films, and own a non-profit organisation called The Shift, where they campaign for equality. Shara is socially conscious and a staunch campaigner of Restorative Justice and raises awareness by amplifying the voiceless through full inclusion and innovative expression. The company’s numerous business awards serve as a constant reminder of the vital support they provide writers and creatives to create legacy and generational wealth opportunities for their communities. Shara Lewis Campbell has not only established herself within the writing industry, despite every factor which she had to overcome, but she has also provided a space for other writers to do the same. She has achieved one of the most important steps towards making a difference; allowing people to be heard.
